Question by Annabelle: Costs of owning a Nubian goat?
I am seriously considering buying a Nubian dairy goat. I really love the milk, and heard that goats are pretty easy animals to take care of. My husband and I live on 1.5 acres of land (huge grassy field), and we have a huge 4 stall barn (empty). I live in Maine. So my question is, approximately what are the costs of owning a Nubian goat, (taking into consideration what I already have) and how much does it cost to buy one? Thanks.
P.S I really don’t even know where to start… So any advice would be helpful!

  1. Its pretty involved if you want milk.

You need a male goat or you can artificially inseminate the doe yourself. A female has to get pregnant to produce milk. Then you have to either keep the baby or find a new home for it..

  2. You can’t just have one. You’re asking for a LOAD of problems if you try. You need 2. NO bucks, but 2

Cost are high for the amount of milk you’ll get, and the work to get it. The animals(s) need: Free choice hay, 24/7, grain when bred and lactating, worming, vaccinations, emergency farm calls, stud service, the kids need disbudding and castration, etc.

ALL those amounts depend on where you attain them, and how much you’ll do by yourself.

I bred for 15 years, and, at one point, had 16 Saanen milkers and a buck

The best advice I can give you is find your vet FIRST! If you don’t have a cooperative large animal vet in your area, think twice
