Rancho Margot is an eco-tourism project set at the foothills of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest near the shores of Lake Arenal. A combination of sustainable hotel practices, organic farming and creative engineering makes Rancho Margot a wonderful place to stay while traveling in this area. Lake Arenal receives a steady supply of mountain-driven wind, and thus is one of Central America’s foremost windsurfing destinations. Aside from this, its waters can be plied for fish or skimmed over with a kayak. The nearby Arenal Volcano National Park offers wonderful hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, and there are canopy tours and suspension bridges nearby that can be enjoyed as well. Rancho Margot is one of the most advanced and sustainable eco-tourism projects in all of Costa Rica. The hotel was constructed with sustainable practices in mind and is a forerunner in the conservation effort: the hotel works in partnership with the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, operating a ranger station within its grounds. Additionally, Rancho Margot has a functioning dairy farm, pig farm and chicken farm; an organic vegetable and fruit garden; a medical plant garden; and a bio-digester, which is responsible for generating the farm’s natural gas and hydroelectric power.
