Completely ignoring religion, why should gay marriage not be legal?

Question by Jamie: Completely ignoring religion, why should gay marriage not be legal?
This question is, of course, only answerable by people that believe gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed. If you are not one of those people, you may move on. Or not, it’s your choice.
@dan; Please explain how.
@Michael; Your logic seems flawed to me, honestly. Adultery in heterosexual marriages doesn’t seem to have much to do with homosexual marriage. Also, did you know that civil unions only give about 1/4 of the benefits that marriage gives? I wouldn’t be happy with that, would you?

  1. I believe that allowing ANY minority the right to circumvent the established law-making process would set a dangerous legal precedent that could (and would) be exploited by a future minority to push their own agenda onto the majority.

    So, in states where voters have chosen to allow same-sex marriage in their state licensing standards, I respect the decision. I only wish the will of the voters in states where they voted to not allow the change in licensing standards was equally respected.

    you know… in the interest of “fairness”…

  3. What benefit does it provide to the Government that justifies the Government giving them benefits? I mean you can say about male-female not always providing a family(in the sense of having children, this isn’t about just raising so don’t bother with the adoption argument), but creating a family is one of the main reasons the Government encourages marriage. I don’t mean just having children, I mean the children being in a better environment by having both parents. This is proven by studies that things being equal it is better to have a mother and father, not just two adults before you try to make that argument. I mean we all know encouraging marriage and encouraging couples to wait doesnt’ make them, BUT this is a reason for giving them benefits to encourage marriage.

  5. There is firstly the definition – there is no such thing as gay “marriage” as marriage by it’s very definition is between a man and women. But aside from that argument by allowing such a travesty of a marriage you not only place extra burden on the tax system by giving these people access via being “spouces” but you also create many legal problems.

    One glaring one is in divorce and adultery laws. A heterosexual couple under current laws can divorce under adultery laws if one partner engages in a homosexual relationship. If the laws allow homosexuals equal marriage rights then it means one partner has to suffer as the other engages in a homosexual relationship. It also creates a backlog as all those divorce settlements and child rights will need to be renegotiated.

    But maybe the most obvious reason is why should a gay couple “marry”? They can cohabit and just live under civil unions without hassling the heterosexual majority. So it’s nothing more than undemocratic tyranny by the gays to want something they have no biological or historical rights to.

  7. What other reason is there? The main reason people don’t agree is because of their religion and their upbringing. A traditional life for a man was to become a hard worker, get married, have a family, and maybe a picket fence. The traditional life for the female at one point was to get married, take care of the house, and take care of the kids. There was no inbetween as far as I know. Most people see anything they aren’t used to as odd. This can be related to numerous things over time. Take for example in t he 70/80s. A black person sitting in the front of the bus would be odd and spook everyone out. Interracial relationships were also odd, and usually resulted in punishment back then. Filming sex acts was considered way more extreme then it is now. So would anal sex, and performing such acts for an audience. People strapping themselves with bombs is odd, people crashing planes into skyscrapers are odd, and people getting stoned is odd also. Most people, especially in america weren’t raised to any of this. I was reading a child’s book not too long ago. I think it was on the middle school grade level. It was about the birds and the bees. I was just browsing the pages and there was a section that mentioned something about homosexuality. In all my years, I have never read a child’s book that mentioned homosexuality. It’s an obvious attempt to educate the younger kids on the homosexual culture, thus making them more accepting of it and less alienated. I wasn’t raised knowing what homosexual was. I came across it in a dictionary once, but I’ve never actually heard anyone say the word. When it became more announced in the present decade, I didn’t really care. I still don’t care.
