www.permies.com Karen biondo of La Biondo Farm and Kitchen shows us a shed that serves as both a cold smoker and a composting toilet. What a wacky combination! Karen smokes pork and salmon in the cold smoker. She uses alder in an old wood stove for the smoker. Then you step around the corner and there is a composting toilet. No smell She says the secret to keeping the smell away is the use of peat moss or wood shavings. Apparently it goes three or four months between needing to be emptied. Wait, isn’t it the same as conventional manure if you “solarize” it? Let it bake and process for a long period of time? I mean, people in China have been using humanure for centuries haven’t they?

Great, original combination idea! With reference to the use of compost toilet compost on vegetables, it depends on who uses the facility if it’s only you and your family, with a known state of health then it’s OK. We’ve all been living too long in the shadow of advertising and product placement, the idea of asepsis is just that. What do people think happens to the waste from the ‘treatment’ plants – it is already been dumped as slurry back onto conventional food crops – google it and see.

I’m not sure I’d be all that comfortable having a smokehouse right next to an outhouse, they probably will never have any problems but it just don’t sit right with me for some reason.

I agree. And I must I admit I was surprised when I first heard of people being concerned about both septic and sewer systems. So I’ll spell out what you probably know, but which was shocking to me: septic systems can leach icky stuff into the groundwater–particularly because it’s below the plant layer that usually filters things out before they are rinsed underground by the rain. In sewer systems, “treated” water is often released into local lakes, rivers or the ocean.

No, you cannot use compost from a toilet on vegetables, unless PROPERLY composted utilizing thermophilic bacteria that heat the material to a high enough temperature to kill what pathogens might be left in the human waste.

I noticed that she said she uses the compost from the toilet on the flower beds. and your thanks to her for not having used it on the Asparagus bed. Can you use compost from a toilet on vegetable gardens?

Certainly a uniques combination but also certainly making use of a structure that is already there. Not quite stacking functions more like side by side functions. Thanks!
