Question by PI_girl: Cement blocks for square foot garden?
We’re going to try square foot gardening this year instead of rows. I’ve read that you can use cement blocks to build the squares instead of lumber. Has anyone done this? How did you build it? How did you support it? How do you attach your trellises? Help!!! 🙂 Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
While I agree that lumber may be a little easier, we have an “over-abundance” of cement blocks left over from a prior project so we want to use them rather than buy lumber.
Give your answer to this question below!
Here’s agreat website that offers information about square foot gardening, including a “how-to” section.

Lumber would be much simpler.
You may find that rain washes out soil from between blocks.
Attaching trellises would be done by sticking them fairly deep in the ground.
This style of gardening does not have to be done as a raised bed garden (meaning either lumber or block making walls).
I dug up my grass in a 4 foot by 12 foot strip, dug in peat moss, and have had wonderful success for the last 9 years of gardening. I didn’t build up walls. I did use the square foot spacing in my planting. Works great right in the ground! Remember to never step on the garden soil. It is easy to reach in 2 feet from one side or the other.
Happy gardening.
