Question by Virginia: Can you keep a pet chicken in a city?
I want to get a Old English Game Bantam hen as a pet in a neighborhood. My neighbors already think I’m wacky so I don’t care what they say of the chicken but is it legal to own a chicken as a pet?

  1. It depends where you live. In my city (yes, I live in the ‘burbs) it’s legal to have chickens but not roosters. Call your city hall or something and I’m sure they can direct you to the right place 🙂

  2. Check the laws in your particular city. The backyard chicken movement is really big right now, so many large and smaller cities do allow chickens. However, many still do not. In my city it is, and I have 7 and know of many people in the neighborhood who also have chickens. In the city that we share a border with, 2 miles west of my house, it is illegal to keep chickens (and they do enforce it).

Also, chickens are social animals and really should be kept in at least pairs. One lone chicken will be very stressed and lonely, and therefore more susceptible to diseases.
