Question by Samuel S: Can you castrate a male goat with a rubber band?
I am starting to castrate my baby male goats and I am wondering if it can be done this way.

  1. Don’t even attempt it with regular rubber bands, it won’t work and you’ll end up with sick goats and partial castrations.

    It can to be done with a special tool called an elastrator that uses bands that are much, much tougher than rubber bands. You can buy an elastrator (and bands) at most any farm supply store, or through one of the online vet supply companies (Valley Vet Supply, Jeffers, etc).
    “Banding” takes several weeks for the scrotum to dry up and fall off, during which time the young kid is suseptible to tetanus among other things. It is also painful, with the pain lasting for several weeks.

    Or you can call your vet who can take care of the matter in just a few minutes with vitually no pain, vitually no risk of infection, very little blood. Recovery will be much quicker too.
