Gardening Day 1 was spent making this raised bed, and prepping the area for planting. It’s not directly in front of our apartment, but it’s a great spot for sun, and it’s well off the street.

Question by David M: Can I make a raised bed garden with cinder blocks?
Concrete leaches alkali material when it gets wet. Do I need to take any precautions in order to grow vegetables (tomato, pepper, bean) to keep the soil pH from getting too high?

  2. My garden is made with cinder blocks. Just get a soil test every year and then you’ll know how the soil is doing and what to add to it to improve it. But cinderblocks have worked great for my garden – and have been working great for 80 years since my great grandpa built the garden! Good luck and happy gardening.

  3. Just don’t plant acid loving plants next to the blocks, or use a pine bark mulch to neutralize the alkali from the blocks.
