Question by Travis Hoggatt: can I build a farm on retail zoned land in los angeles?
I am looking to build an aquaponics farm in los angeles. The lot is just under 100,000 square feet, and is zoned for retail. If it is necessary, how difficult is to get a lot re-zoned?

What do you think? Answer below!

  1. Getting a lot rezoned in Los Angeles might take a long time and insurmountable paper work on your part. Then you still might be denied.

You would have to inquire from the planning commission if there are particular areas that might be a better area to do the type farming you would want. There are a few farms that I see in the Los Angeles area, however most are located in sort of remote areas like under overhead power lines.

What I don’t know is the type farm they are. The type farm you seem to want to build use a lot of plastic coverings. I have seen areas with large plastic coverings though this is the first time I have been able to put a name to this type farming.

Though some areas appear to be in the Los Angeles area they might actually be in another city though still in Los Angeles county, therefore make sure you apply for your rezoning through the proper city.

I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.

  2. It will never ever happen. The chemicals involved with agriculture would require rezoning for a lot more land then your lot and plans would have to be made to take care of water run off. LA would never ever tolerate that. The rezoning fees would run in the millions and I doubt they would even agree if you paid.
