Question by Kimberly Luu: Can fantail goldfish and plecos live outside?
I have a 40 gallon tank outside for my aquaponics system, and I was wondering if fantails can live outside. I live in SoCal so it never gets cold enough for the water to frost over or anything, but it does get down to about 40-50 at night during the winter. Are they too sensitive for that kind of water temperature? Also, are plecos okay with that temperature?
Give your answer to this question below!
Plecos should not as they are tropical fish. Actually they should not live with goldfish as they are notorious from sucking the slime off goldfish. Fantails can but I don’t recommend it. They like slightly warmer temperatures and are slow moving so predators could easily get them.

Goldfish can survive under ice in the winter, but Plecos won’t survive under 60F for long.

Plecos are fresh water fish and need a certain requirements. Goldfish on other hand could do well with that as long as you have a water cooler so it isnt to warm in the summer. Good luck!

Goldfish of any type can only withstand water down to a temperature of about 67 degrees Fahrenheit.I’m not sure about the Plecos. And a Pleco might attack and kill the goldfish.Goldfish typically do best with other fish of their specific kind.If you put a fancy goldfish with a common, or comet the commons and comets will steal the food away from the fancy and bully it.Best to keep the fish with their own kind.

Goldfish – yes. They can generally survive water temps down to 40F, and can even live under a layer of ice for a while, although fancy goldfish don’t tend to be as hardy.
Plecos are tropical and can NEED warm water. They may survive in a pond if it’s warm enough, but an outside tank tends to cool off faster than a large in ground pond and will probably get too cold overnight.
