Beekeepers MUST kill the adult small hive beetles before egg and larva stage. Larvae eat thru honey comb in search of bee pollen making honey leak and ferment, called sliming. Bees then abscond from hive leaving a sticky mess even other bees barely rob. To clean up I put boxes over ant mounds to begin removing crud, then a few days in the sun to dry up honey slime. This is going to be a major beekeeping problem if not controlled in states like Florida,Georgia,North South Carolina,Alabama,Mississippi,Tennessee and Louisiana. Other states Will get them, forget cold weather, they winter at edge of honeybee cluster just fine.

  2. John has been keeping bee for years and years. This is a beekeeper tell you what works for him, I really don’t think there is a case study on this. As the bees can’t get to the bait it is safe in the bee hive. I think it is a great idea I glad someone thought of it.. I use ant traps that I bait seems to work well for me at this point. But we will see.

  6. Also, if you’re referring to the bottom platforms needing lips, that’s not necessary either, especially with bigger hives. Again, the weight holds them down, and a lot of times, bees fill the tiny gaps between supers and brooders with propolis, which keeps them from slipping. It also makes it a pain to pry boxes apart sometimes, haha, but they do that to make sure there’s no air/humidity leaks in the hive.

  7. Suspending a hive would require wire cabling at the very least, assuming you can find a tree branch strong enough to support it. As those bee boxes fill with bees, brood, honey, and wax, each deep super could weigh, on it’s own, around 90lbs.

  8. How do the beetles arrive at the hive? Do they fly there
like most beetles? Or do they have to crawl in? I’m wondering
if suspending the hive from a tree branch would effectively thwart
ground based attacks from hive beetles or other enemies.
Can a hive be kept 40 feet from the ground?
Why is there no lip of any kind to keep each box sitting
in the right place? It seems like high wind or an animal
    could slide them easily.

  15. I’ve seen keepers just put the hives on a trough of water so ants and such can’t get into them.
