Question by RustySilva: Beekeeping – What would be the minimum area for keeping bees?
I’m hoping to move later this year and would like to keep bees.
I also want to make sure the bees will not not be a problem for neighbours, I know some people either don’t like them or have a phobia.

Also how far do bees travel in search of food.

Any useful advice most welcome – is one hive OK, how to get started, etc. – thanks

  1. People have bees in NYC, on rooftops, so space is not a problem. They need a clear flight path. If you can encircle the hive in a tall fence, they will fly over it (and your neighbors heads, hopefully).

They will search out a supply of water, so having them near all your neighbors’ pools is not a good idea either.

They normally fly in a 1 mile radius depending upon foraging prospects.

Check with your local ordinances. There may be some limitations. I had to give mine up when I moved to my current location because of town laws. Even though there lots are minimum 1/2 acre, there are three parks within a mile, and woodland and farm land across the street, no go.

One hive is OK. Two is a good start as you can do things with two that you can’t do with one (like share food).

  2. From what I’ve read there is no exact amount of space required. You can have hives in your back yard if you wish. But I would check with immediate neighbors to see if anyone has a problem with it. Most gardening neighbors would be happy to see you bring the bee’s in. It’s great for production of fruit and vegetables. This first site below is a link to a lot of bee keeping web pages.

  3. The city of Chicago has them on top of City hall.
The bees can fly several miles in search of a source of blossoms.
But before you get started contact your local beekeepers association. They can get you started in the right direction. You will be able to find sources for supplies and magazines that are full of information. It is a very interesting and rewarding hobby.,
