Beekeeping: Migrating from Full to Medium Supers

I am migrating from full size supers (my brood box) to medium supers. I’m doing this so all my frames and boxes are the same size to I can easily exchange them when needed. I started using full size supers because that is the size I needed for the Nuc frames I bought last year. I spoke with Wendy and Kenny Reed from BeeWilde.com and they said they would make me medium size nucs this year. All I need to do is bring them the boxes and pulled frames. Super deal! I will do that and be able to start my two new hives this year in mediums.

  1. Approx how many acres of, say meadowland with usual wild flowers, needed to support a medium sized hive? (i.e., how big an oasis in the middle of a Monsanto desert ?)

  3. Just keep Monsanto away from them. It has been used here for years and I have only seen three honey bees in the past five years. Great info on prepping them for spring.

  5. @mcgiver2004 Around 50 times. 45 of them at once. That is why I now always wear my suit and gloves. Since then no more stings. 🙂

  7. Consider placing a water source near the hive or close to the pollen. Water is needed in the production of honey and the closer it is to the hive equals more yield. Just a thought

  8. Another informative video. Thank you. I’m fairly certain that I’ve already lost my three weak hives. Will endeavor to maintain my best hive though the winter.
I’ll check the hives out next weekend. Sigh…………………………
