Question by Rnd: Beekeeping – Do deep supers have some advantage that outweighs their, um, weight?
I’m not talking about for some big commercial operation. This would just be a backyard, hobby type thing. I’m considering getting 2 hives but I’m not sure if I should go with the 2 deep/2 medium or all mediums?

Is there some special advantage to the deep supers?

  1. you might look into “Top Bar” type hives..these were appealing to me due to you can work the honey (once it starts to collect) almost anytime you want and can gather small amounts along with being able to collect wax for different uses, where as the conventional hives limit you to certain times of the years for the honey and may be more at one time than the home owner may want at one time.

  2. I would go with two deep and two medium supers per hive.
that gives more room for the brood chamber (the deep ones). Deep supers full of honey will be very heavy (ca 70 pounds). The deep boxes full of brood are not too heavy and you do not have to move them very often. — Just pull frames at times and they are not too heavy.
