9 Responses to Balcony Composting in a 5-Gallon Bucket
Look it up on the internet. I know things really composted fast down in Haiti, it was warmer and there was a lot of bacteria working on the stuff. Worms really speed it up– look up vermicomposting. Check with the Master Gardeners of the county where you live. I once heard a master gardener give a talk on vermicomposting; I think the fastest are the little red wiggler worms. I don’t know how many it would take to turn stuff into dirt in 2 weeks, though! Good luck.
This is pretty much what I do on my apartment balcony in central Pennsylvania! Right now it’s winter so there’s not much happening to it, but during the summer it was making good progress, even though the balcony faces primarily North and only gets a bit of sun in the morning.
note to other people, dont go any smaller on the bucket size as about 5×5 is what you need to make compost, anything smaller you tend to not get the heated core, etc.
