One Response to Are black bees more dangerous than honey bees?
The big black bees that cause so much fear and bother (they are called “carpenter bees”, by the way, because the female drills holes in wood, to make a home for her babies), are the male bees – and they actually don’t even sting!! They just buzz around fighting each other, so that the strongest can mate with the females, who do all the work: they are quite harmless, however. The females, who make the holes and get the nectar to make honey and who raise the babies and everything else, DO sting, but only as a last resort, if captured or severely disturbed. In other words, if you see the smaller females, just leave them alone: they won’t bother you like the dumb males will, and will only sting if you really get in their face.
