Aquaponics system for under 0 using a 30 gallon fish and a 10ft PVC pipe. This is my first aquaponics system but plan on doing some more here in the future. I will continue to post videos of this system and many more.

Just make sure you rinse them off good first, they have a lot of hard dust in them that I’m sure the fish wouldn’t take well too… Tho it would prolly dilute…

For my system, I flow water through my grow trays 2 minutes every 20 minutes. I submerge to just below the gravel line to prevent algae growth. After a 2 minute watering cycle, the water drains and draws air through the gravel to the roots. An electronic controller is used to cycle the water and check water level on my water tank. I am not using an aquarium. A rain water collection system is used as water make up.

They are only submerged about every 45 minutes for about 15 minutes. So far I haven’t had any issues with root rot.

It is best to start seeds in a separate container to control rot. I use a wetted paper towel, top and bottom, and make sure the towel never gets dry. Keep out of the sun. The seeds will germinate in a couple days. Segregate the Baby Hueys (for those not a baby boomer, the larger seedlings). Transplant the healthy seedlings into a peet cup, available from home improvement stores, and then when roots start to show through, place the peet cup into your hydroponics.

Do you have problems with root rot because the roots are continuously submerged? Roots not only need nutrients (fish waste) if they remain submerged, you create a septic environment and will kill the roots, I believe.

lava rocks should work perfect. nice idea. I’m actually in the process of redoing my whole set up and I may use lava rocks in some of my grow beds. Thanks for the feedback

I use Lava rocks and marbles in my set up, also actual soil in some set ups… Build it like a forest floor…

This is cool… I’m thinking of doing this for myself. Couple of questions. Are you only using starter plants? How can you start from seed? What size tank and what type of fish would I need if I want to be able to eat the fish as well? Will the fish reproduce?

For anyone wondering how to take this a step further. Wire in a solar panel to your pumps (air and water) and the entire system is off the grid and permanently self-sustaining as the newest solar panels last 35-40 years before flash out. O____O

A lot of people are using PVC so is it really safe for food – copper pipes might be a good alternative? I guess more research is needed. Good vid though.

Great setup! I want a system in my garage. Does the food pick up any fishy flavor? I know that’s a weird question but I’ve heard it mentioned before. I would like to use raise Koi and then sell them.
