  1. Years ago a successful diversified farmer applied for a loan for a new tractor as his old one was suffering metal fatigue. The bank sent out an agronomist who told him how to farm if he wanted the loan. There went the beef cattle, the replacement cows, the hogs. The hayfield was plowed down – it was all about growing wheat. Two years later he had to sell off 1/2 section because of bad weather and having nothing to fall back on.

  3. Read everything that you can get your hands on written by Gene Logsdon – starting with The Contrary Farmer. It covers “systems” that work with farms; such as time of year, diversity, and work management.

  6. You are right about that. If you go to build it ABOUTSOLARCELLS.COMXA.COM and pose that question to Gary Reysa. Gary is the original designer. Really enjoyed your site by the way!

  9. Thank you for sharing this! I m a youngster, just starting out, I am starting from complete scratch, no money, and not a lot of experience. So I made out a plan, similar to yours, start with chickens because they’re cheaper to care for, make money off them, and work my way up from there. And you’ve reassured me that it can work, if I work hard. So thanks

  16. I love the advice “start small”, but may have taken it too literally ;). I live on a quarter acre suburban lot We wanted a farm, but couldn’t afford to move, and so we decided to work with what we had, where we are, and have been farming our yard. We’re not farmers and will never make a living with what we raise, but it feeds us delicious, wholesome (safe) food, and that’s all I wanted anyway. I think the bottom line is anyone can raise food – anywhere. Thanks for the inspirational film.
