Organic veggie gardens at the SunRun Centre, northeast of Toronto, now under new ownership as Russet House Farm. The original owners, Milt and Barb Wallace, are now retired in Toronto. SunRun/Russet House is an off-the-grid organic farm and environmental education centre. Note the wind turbine. The solar panels are not in view in this picture. I wwoofed here when it was still under Milt and Barb’s ownership, and the following year worked as an intern for the whole summer.

Milt & Barb also founded the Ecovillage Network of Canada in 1997 (see also the Community Page and this Canadian directory of ecovillages and intentional communities for background and context.

For organic internships, apprenticeships, work-stay opportunities and jobs in Canada and beyond see GoodWork Green Jobs, PlanetVolunteer Canada, SOIL Canada, CRAFT Ontario, ACORN (Atlantic Canada), Manitoba Farm Mentorships and WWOOF (Worldwide).

  1. yup, but you’ve still gotta plant them. Otherwise it’s just organic mail-order.

  3. I have been planning and researching for the last 5mths and am ready to get my organic garden started. We made a worm farm out of an old fridge about a year ago, so now we have a steady supply of worm juice and very rich soil to use. We live in Australia and the summer has just finished so will plant my seeds within the next two weeks. We will have to keep in contact and see how our gardens grow!! =)
