Question by Honors Transfer Society: Does being a vegetarian make you kind of weak?
I never notice a top athlete just being vegetarian I mean I know they eat healthy but just don’t resort to eating grass. We’re not goats is it just not the best type of diet if you just want to be in top shape. I’m not trying to lose wight just get stronger and faster so what would be the best food to be complimentary with my exercising.

Not if you are following a balanced diet. The same is true if you eat meat, but if you have bad eating habits it can show up more if you become vegetarian. Lack of iron can be a problem if you don’t eat enough dark green vegetables and nuts and pulses. There are some recipes on my site using lentils and quorn if you are interested.

Well if you’re a crap vegetarian then yes. But if you know what to eat you can be even more energized and faster then when you’re weighd down by all of the fat and cholesteral in the meat that make you feel heavy.

Well, no offense to you but that is rather a brainwashed attitude.
Usain Bolt, who ran faster than any human being at the Olympics , is a vegetarian.
There is no point reading meat propoganda , or articles that are written by unbalanced points of view.
No, meat does NOT make your blood and muscles stronger, protein does.
Iron does, vitamins do.
No we are not goats. Goats can live on paper and brambles. We do not.
I don’t know why you are comparing a human being to a goat if the human being is a vegetarian, I might just as well call a carnivore human being a fly.

That’s because their coaches (like every other ill informed person in the world) think eating meat is the best thing since idk? the wheel?
Take some time to research. The few brave vegetarian athletes who are/were professional competitors were at the top of their game and dominated everyone else.
*** World famous track star Carl Lewis wasn’t always a vegetarian. But he eventually went even further: he adopted a vegan diet to prepare for the World Championships in 1991, where he says he ran the best meet of his life. And he wasn’t the only one who held that opinion–after seeing the results of his race, Track & Field magazine remarked, “It had become hard to argue that he is not the greatest athlete ever to set foot on track or field.”
*** Bill Pearl is a four-time Mr. Universe winner.
***Joe Namath is probably the most famous vegetarian football player.
*** Martina Navratilova is one of the greatest tennis players of the 20th century.
*** One of the greatest NBA basketball players in history, vegetarian Robert Parish played center for the Boston Celtics alongside Larry Bird.
***Dave Scott holds the record for most Iron Man World Championship victories ever (along with his rival Mark Allen, who managed to rack up an equal number of wins).
>>> Vegetarian for LIFE <<< I'm SERIOUSLY not trying to be cocky here, but compared to many of my peers they just don't match up. Being vegetarian is not about eating carrots all day. It's all about balanced nutrition. ~~Concearning diet: You may learn the most from Carl Lewis. He absolutely enjoys his new lifestyle.

Yes indeed, vegetarians are weak. Even though they avoid meat, they often eat eggs and milk that ruin their health. Mind many top athletes are vegetarian and often vegan, Carl Lewis springs to mind. Did you ever see the vegetarian Mr Universe? Google it.

Um, really? You obviously haven’t looked (or maybe paid attention).
Check out these VEGAN folk: http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=723
Bet you wouldn’t take any one of them on.
By the way, I don’t know anybody that eats grass (unless you include grass seeds like rice).

If your intention is building muscle, you should be eating a surplus of protein, which is -easy- on a veg*n diet. Here is a good resource for information about protein-rich vegan foods:
http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm
For someone who is just vegetarian, dairy and egg (eggs especially) are also rich in protein to help contribute to one’s protein intake for the day.
I personally happen to be vegan, I get more than enough protein, I’ve started a weight training routine a few weeks ago and am becoming VERY solid, and I have never eaten grass and don’t ever intend to. Don’t make assumptions until you actually learn about the diet.
Also, here is an entire list of *strong* vegan/vegetarian athletes:

Agree with everyone else I stopped eating meat about 5 years ago and feel better because I am more careful about what I eat and taking enough iron and fresh foods

No, malnutrition makes you weak.
Eating a HEALTHY diet, not a “grass” diet for goats, will make you healthy. Real vegetarians don’t eat just salad.
