Question by Black Sheep: Is it illegal to keep a rooster in a residential area?
I live in a house in a residential area and I really want to buy a rooster, I just miss waking up to a rooster singing. My backyard is pretty big with plenty of room for it to live comfortably. I’m just worried about 3 of my neighbors which are a*ses. The rest of my neighborhood consists of summer houses, and no one lives in them on this time of the year.

  1. It’s impossible to say. In some cities, the residents are allowed to keep chickens and possibly capons but not roosters, in other cities, even chickens are not allowed. It all depends on the zoning in your area.

  2. It violates the county code where I live.

“No person shall own, keep, harbor or possess any animal which, by loud or frequent habitual barking, yelping, braying, crowing or other noise, causes annoyance to the neighborhood or to any person in the vicinity.”

Most communities have such a law or code.
