“I fear all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve”. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, upon learning of the success of the attack on Pearl Harbor
Dec. 7 1941 the Japs flew a sucide mission to Pearl harbor a miltary base in Hawaii. From the attack the U.S. was offically in war. (We had been in the war unoffically with the lend-lease act). the U.S. proved a powerful force and eventually helped to win the war. One could say the atomic bombing was not only to save american lives in battle and POW but for revenge for Pearl Harbor.
Greetings! How about if I answer about the physical plant of Pearl Harbor? That is not often discussed on Pearl Harbor Questions.
WWII Pacific Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz once said after the air raid at Pearl Harbor that it was “…..God’s blessing the ships were all in the Harbor when they were attacked.
What in the world did he mean? Much of the navy was at the bottom of a shallow harbor. How can that be good?
Yes, over 2000 brave men died. Yes, several ships, planes and airfields were damaged. However, the drydocks had just enough damage to be fairly easily repaired, most of the facility was still intact and had supplies to be able to raise most of the ships, fix what they could, scuttle what they couldn’t and refit and resail the ships in quick order. The war operations facilities were also undamaged so a war could be conducted without a heartbeat skip. There was also a huge fuel depot that the Japanese failed to destroy, so in essence, what the Japanese did was puncture a hole in a huge beehive and left it for the very angry bees to fix and retaliate.
I find that to be a unique way of summarizing the results of the Pearl Harbor attack.

Besides plunging the US into the war, the US also had many Japanese citizens arrested and detained in special facilities.
