Good video for beginners. Lets us know the minimal we can get away with if we are cash short for all equipment. I did buy four hives plus supers and a complete beekeeping suit with thick gloves and hat/veil….. I hope to approach all this with care/precision. I love honey with my coffee and ice cream….this will give me an endless supply…thanks ! Will see the rest of your videos as well. Thanks for your slow deliberate delivery of information.
Swedish beekeeper here. I really like your videos, they inspired me to build a TBH yesterday for example, and i just want to chime in with a second opinion on the smoker: I bet your mileage may vary depending on the mood of your bees, but i don’t use a smoker or water or anything when visiting my bees. Again, YMMV of course, i have one friends who does smoke them and one who absolutely refuses, both are equally successful.
I’ve seen people use sugar water as apposed to smoke siting that smoke mimics a forest fire and stresses the bees versus the sugar water that just annoys and forces them to clean themselves. What is your opinion of the sugar water spray?
@gvenema Humor humor. All tongue in cheek. Didn’t mean to upset you. The bees will attack a black cutout as well as the beekeeper. But they will concentrate on the beekeeper as he has a smell. You can see from my past vids the bees attacking the lens of the camera because it is black.
This is just the information I’ve been looking for. You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve chased around someone looking for used beekeeping equipment, or even been promised the stuff, only to have them decide they want to keep it. Anyway, it’s a good start. We may try our hand at trapping a swarm this year, and are building top bar hives. We saw this stuff on some of your earlier videos. It may be poor boy, but that’s the way we love life good and simple. Wish us luck at Indian Country Farms.
@gvenema Try it. Set up a black cardboard cutout 15 feet from a hive. Then strip naked and beat the hive with a stick and go stand 10 feet from the cutout. Let us know the results. :0)
Very informatiove as always, thank you very much. A question not related to this video but for TBH for you is about the ratio of brood width bars to honey width bars for a new hive that I am awaiting bees for. Using a hive built to the demontions like the hive you have on your site, would it be beneficial to use a divider board as well?
biobees is in the UK where there are no africanized bees. I dare you to try that in Texas as a regular practice. Make sure you have a full suit and good veil if you do try it, please.

75% should be brood bars.
I’ve never used a divider board, dont understand why anyone would. Peace corps never teach them, either.
