it’s all good somehow the bees make it…talked to a local farmer says bees do better where the winters are extreme because they slow down more..just need good insulation…..cold makes the skin thick i strike those matches on the beards of the ladies here
great vids mate..if you can, tell about raising bees where it is -20 to -40 for 5 months of the year. would greatly be appreciated….If not, well i’ll still watch your vids lol
Cheers
Thanks for your vids, keep em coming… I’ve learnt so much and so many little tips like the bread knife trick after having forked out for a hive knife (excuse the pun!)
I was a bit worried as in the UK I struggle to find other Top Bar Hivers, it seems Nationals are the only done thing here.
It was a nice feeling watching and then going back to my hive and noticing stuff as a newcomer to beekeeping would’ve completely missed. How do Bees know where 1 bar stops and the next starts?
Thank you
Top bar hives weren’t “designed with developing countries in mind.” White people were doing top bar hive beekeeping in Europe thousands of years before anyone ever thought to try to teach “developing” Africans anything.

Hi there, thanks for this video. It seems it would be so much easier to work the frames, if they were complete with sides & bottom. I like the idea of a Lang hive about 30 frames wide. You could work a lang. hive with min. equipment. I’ve been saying that for years. You could cut the comb out & put the empty frame back between two other near full frames, next time take the frames you left behind this time & so on.
First year on any hive, it is unlikely you will have surplus to harvest. KTBH or Lang.
I’d pull honey at beginning of winter if they have honey stores past bar 15. 1-14 is all them, 15+ is surplus. Use common sense. Your actual mileage may vary.
I have built a top bar hive and have ordered bees. I’m excited to start keeping bees. Have no idea how to know if you can harvest honey from the hive at the end of the season, how much or when etc. Can you comment?

OH, OK. the lid could be modified, but your right, it makes it more complicated.
that would be a bad idea. it would create a gap under the lid, a void for small hive beetles. Further, it is against the spirit of top bar hive simplicity. I’d have to go against that recommendation.
what about a cover for the TBH?

I cann’t do that. I’ve heard at -40 even fire freezes, and you can break off pieces of the frozen flames and use them for matches in the spring.

Just curious – where do you have the entrances at on your hives? Ends? On The side middle? On the side ends? Thanks for sharing this video.
