23 Responses to Homemade Self Watering Container with Tire(s) – Garden Construction
A woman was using tires with a similar set up in her backyard garden in Missouri. The cops wrote up a citation for a nuisance ordinance. The police chief admitted she did not violate any city ordinance but the city is going forward with the case against her. She will not pay or destroy her garden because she feels a moral responsibility to fight this injustice. She is risking jail time. I thought it my duty to inform an innocent gardener of the troubles of another innocent gardener.
lol what an awesome vid!! loved the tire thief! and the apology afte he plucked that poor grass and ate it…great idea and it seems you got some great kids as well 🙂
There’s a lot of info online (reliable sources) about toxic chemicals in tires that leach to soil. Actual human exposure would take a lot of factors into consideration including the types of plants being grown, etc. I would not use tires to grow food either, Too many other options. Since I can’t post a link just Google “toxicants in tires”.
Old tyres are a great building material but are toxic. I would suggest you do not use them for growing food as they will leech pollutants into the soil and into your plants.
i like this idea it takes the xplaint hydroponics idea and makes it more piratical. But the down side I had with using tires & my type of soil (red clay) is it builds thermal mass and cooks my plant roots. have you had problems with this?
Thanks Ed. We had 4 bee hives on the property about 3 years ago. There was a little trouble finding enough pollen with the mesquites in this valley. Things may have improved. Our fruit trees have improved in growth. It may be time to restart.
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing another creative thinking video that your making your environment work for you instead of having to struggle against it. Hopefully you will post a video one day that your family decided to set up a bee hive for pollination of your plants. keep these great videos coming

My understanding is not the same as yours. Please could you be specific: Which “pollutants”? Quote a reference or source?
