The bottom layer is a bedding of shredded and slightly damp newspaper, with a little soil mixed in. A happy place for the worms to lay their eggs.

Question by yunhee k: Can you use cricket feed as meal worm bedding?
im planning on breeding meal worms and i researched on how to breed for at least 3 hours and i just need to know can you use flukers cricket feed as beding for your mealworm colony.

  1. Yes, that works good, but if you want something cheaper, you can use oatmeal. Thats what I have always used for my mealworm bedding, and it has always worked great. Throw in sliced apples and potatoes every now and again (for moisture/water) and you will be fine!

  2. Oat or wheat based breakfast cereal works, use a small dish/plate for giving them moist foods or the dry stuff gets damp and mouldy. I remove enough for the next 2 days and feed them on cricket feed just for the extra calcium and vitamins the main colony just gets cheap stuff
