Question by fresiansrus: How much would it cost me to have my goat fixed?
I am considering rescuing a 2 year old pygmy goat, but he is not castrated. I would need him to be fixed in order to bring him home to the farm. How much would this cost on average?

  1. Free if you just bite his testicles off yourself

  2. Normally a vet would charge about $ 25 or so to do it. Plus coming out to do it is about $ 60.
You could do it your self though. Surgically, Banding or using Emasculatomes(Buzzardo: aka, Cord crushers).
None of these are hard to do. Very simple procedures.

  3. My vet charges me $ 25 per goat to get them castrated. I bring my bucklings to the vet office, though, so it would cost more if you wanted the vet to go to your farm.

There are three main methods of castration – cutting (or surgical castration), crushing, and banding.

I suggest getting him surgically castrated; at two years old, his testicles are probably too big to band (banding is when you take a cheerio-sized rubber band and put it at the base of their scrotum). If you decide to band, you’ll want to do it when they’re still young. Crushing would work too, although I’ve never had much experience with it. The problem with crushing is that you don’t know if it worked or not until his testicles start to shrink, and not many people have the proper equipment for crushing. There are pros and cons to each method, though, and you should look at them all before deciding which way to go.
