The Library of Celsus was comissioned by the Consul Julius Aquila as a mausoleum for his father, Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, Roman governor of the Asian Provinces. It may be that Celsus was granted heroic honors, which would furthur justify the expense.

The monument was constructed between 110 and 135 AD, after which Celsus was buried in a niche on the right side of the back wall.

With a few centuries of its construction a fire destroyed the reading room and the library fell into disuse. Around 400 AD, the courtyard below the exterior steps was converted into a pool. The facade collapsed in an earthquake in the 10th century.

The Library of Celsus was raised from the rubble to its present splendid state by F. Hueber of the Austrian Archaeological Institute between 1970 and 1978.

  1. Bronze turkeys are the best to raise as the white turkeys will just stay dirty looking. As for space, I would say that you would need a good sized pen for that many. You can start small and just enlarge as you need to. While they are small they need to be covered, as they will be sitting ducks to other animals…Owls, etc. After they get big enough they should be okay outside in a good pen most all of the time. They will try to get in the trees if you have any in the pen after they figure out that they can fly. They grow quickly and are fun to watch. The males when they get older will shudder their feathers and gobble trying to outdo the others. When they are small, if they don’t figure out how to eat or drink, you can put colorful marbles in the water or food and they will peck at them because they are shiny. They love shiny stuff and when I would sit out in the pen with them they would peck at my rings. They are not incredibly intelligent and should not be allowed to run loose. They will not get out of the way of a moving car like a chicken or a duck will. Enjoy raising them!
