I was told that a pregnant woman is not allowed to eat/drink goat and sheep products, is that true? Why?

Question by dynamite: I was told that a pregnant woman is not allowed to eat/drink goat and sheep products, is that true? Why?
I have been drinking goat milk for 7 years, and am 9 weeks along with my first pregnancy, should I stop? It is just much cheaper for me since i get it from my parents farm, and I am very used to it.

  1. I would talk to your doctor first since you have been drinking it for years, but no women are not supposed to drink or eat goat/sheep milk or cheese because it is unpasteurized which can bring bacteria or ecoli to the baby.

Maybe your body has worked up protection against them because you have been eating/drinking them for years but I would talk to your doctor first just to be sure.

  2. As long as the dairy products are pasturized, it doesn’t matter what animal they come from.

Unpasturized dairy can potentially contain harmful bacteria.

(And the meat from sheep or goats is, of course, perfectly safe if cooked.)

  3. If its not pasteurized then yes it true. Pregnant women have more of a chance of getting an infection from bacteria.

  4. Is the milk pasteurized? You have an increased risk of Listeria or ingesting other types of harmful bacteria if not.
As long as the goat/sheep milk is pasteurized and any products are made with pasteurized milk, it should be ok.
