  1. My across the street neighbor does and I care for them when she is gone. She built a lean to coop in her side yard strategically placed where the afternoon canyon winds we get don’t blow the smell across her backyard and patio. She also covers the entire ground of the coop with wood shavings and throws in the cedar type to control odors. She feeds them table scraps, peelings from veggies and even the snails I hand pick out of my yard in the evenings when it is cool also to minimize the smell. She did have to add some hardtack to the “ceiling” of the coop because we have wildlife, like Bobcats which jumped the fence and ate her chickens. So think about what is in your area that could get into the coop. Finally, a word of caution. She is “technically” in violation of the city codes here. In the nine years she has had chickens, her neighbors haven’t lodged a complaint and the city hasn’t lodged fines largely because she shares the eggs with her neighbors regularly. It kinda makes up for the noise they make when laying the eggs and because we never smell them, we don’t complain.

  2. I don’t know about pointers but you better check with your neighbors first. My neighbor decided to try this without checking with us or any other neighbors. The result was a lot of bad feelings and eventually they had to get rid of them.
