Question by vlb03001: How do you become an ADGA certified judge?
I am interested in becoming a judge for goat shows and figured being ADGA certified would give me a good advantage over other judges in my area. How do I go about doing this, and does anyone have suggestions for becoming a judge who is NOT affiliated with ADGA? I am in New England, if that helps or matters.

  1. In order to be an ADGA judge you need to be a member and take not only the training but also a couple of different tests(you will need to know the Hsndbook very very well!. You can find out the information on the ADGA site and go from there, if not then you should contact the office by fax, mail, or email.

  2. The only way you can judge an ADGA sanctioned show is by becoming a judge with ADGA. I judge a lot of county fairs and unsanctioned shows. The best way to do that is to become involved with 4-H and go through their program if they have one. It also helps to be very involved in showing yourself and in your state DGA.
To become an ADGA certified judge you must: 1. Be an individual member of ADGA. You can’t have just a family or farm membership. 2. You must take a PreTC class. That stands for Pre training conference. There is one this summer in Minnesota and there is usually one at the ADGA convention. After taking the preTC you much then take a 2 day TC. Again there is one in Minnesota this summer and should be one at the convention this fall. Part of the TC will be tests in judging, a written test on the score card and a test on giving reasons. If you pass all that then you’ll get a judging license. This license will be good for either 1 year of 4 years. At that time you have to do it all over again to keep your license. Even judges who have been judging for years and years and years have to take the TC to keep their license. It’s pretty expensive though if you’re a good judge you can make it all back and even make money judging. It’s not easy or cheap to get an ADGA license but it’s well worth it if you can do it.
