The chicken coop about halfway done. It may have been finished in one weekend but for cold/rainy weather.

Question by Dawn: How can I make my chicken coop and their run smell better?
My chicken coop does not smell too bad because I change the liter often, but outside in the run, it stinks terrible! The ground is wet, so that doesn’t help, I’m sure. Can I put lime or something on the ground to cut the smell?

  2. Hi,
The ground is foul. You can try several things. Spade up the ground a bit and mix in some lime. Ask at the feed store and they will know which lime to give to you. There are two types and you need to get the right one. If it is just one hole, I had real good success with Equine Fresh. It’s pressed wood pellets which are put in the bottom of a horse stall to absorb moisture. Neat product but just for spot problems. I had a dust hole my chickens made which filled up with water after a rain, Stunk to high heaven. Bought bag of Equine Fresh and dumped it in. The pellets burst when they absorb the moisture. There’s some chorophyll in the product and it cleared the air right away I was left with a sweet smelling hole filled with wet sawdust. Problem solved. I would not use Equine Fresh in the coop. For the coop, you can mix Sweet PDZ in with the shavings . It’s another horse stall product the consistancy of sugar, the birds won’t eat it and it removes smells and moisture.
    Best Success,
    Karen in PA.
