How do I convert my lamp post to solar?

Question by Keo: How do I convert my lamp post to solar?
My Home Owners Association requires we have a specific lamp post in our yard, and I would like to convert it to solar power instead of hard wiring it. Are there kits available that will allow me to take my existing lamp post and convert it to Solar? Please keep in mind, that I can not change the model of lamp post we have, so I would like to replace the guts to make it solar.

  1. No biggie here. Cut the power to the post. Cap off the wires after removing the retainer and make sure the wires don’t slide back down the post. Purchase and install a solar operated, dusk to dawn light and secure the base pole of the new light into the post by drilling through the post and light tube. 2 holes should do it. Use self tapping sht. metal screws for securing.

  2. Due to panel size requirements, most ready made solar light kits are very low voltage/wattage, thus not very bright. I assume your associations requirements are for security purposes? If so, the brightness of the light required for such applications requires too high a voltage/wattage for a solar application to be practical. It is not impossible, but you will have to connect quite a few panels together and have a relatively large battery connected. The setup cost of such a rig (taking into account lifespan and maintenance costs as well) would basically negate any savings on electricity you would make.
