Question by Elizabeth T: How to Raise Champion Turkeys for 4-H or Pleasure?
I want to start raising Turkeys for pleasure. My friend is going to join the 4-H and I told her she can use my turkeys to show if she doesn’t sell them to slaughter. I think it would be fun to have Turkeys. We’ve decided on Bronze Turkeys. The chicks at the feed store are really expensive, so I need to know how to do this the right way.

  1. If you have a turkey you should keep the turkey in some type of turkey or chicken coop. Here you can place bedding inside of a small shed or barn to keep the turkeys warm from the winter months. You can also place some heat lamps inside of the shed or barn to keep them extra warm. The bedding will also help to keep them from freezing to death during the colder months. You can give them different types of bird seed and other things to keep them healthy, active and happy. You should also give them plenty of fresh water on a daily basis. Unfortunately, they can’t be housetrained, but can be taught to come when they’re called. Turkeys can get somewhat large; about the size of a large dog. They are not known for biting, only when they feel really scared or when they feel threatened. They will most likely run away before they do anything else. My friend has a pet turkey, and he likes to sleep on her son’s lap. Imprinted turkeys even like hugs and kisses too, but they can peck at warts of freckles on your body, so tell him/her “No” when they do that, and give them something else to peck on.
