  1. Most urban areas don’t allow chickens or geese because of the noise they make. If you are in a more country area it may be allowed.

  2. How sweet that Debbie P wants to keep chickens in her back yard “as pets and for the eggs.” If she’s gone ahead and done so since posting here in October 2012, I wonder if she’s had any feedback from her neighbors about the noise.

We are “blessed” (NOT) having a neighbor behind us (since 2012) who has at least half a dozen chickens in a large coop. Most of the time this is no big deal, but EVERY MORNING at the crack of day the flock wakes up and is VERY NOISY for 5-10 minutes to greet the new day. This absolutely DESTROYS SLEEP for me, and it’s at its peak right now with the long summer days and early sunrise. I would talk to them about it, but from other activities they engage in that are also noisy I wonder if they would be receptive. From other on-line forums, I see that some chicken owners have been considerate enough of their neighbors’ concerns to cover the coop so that their chickens’ morning chorus doesn’t happen until 8 a.m., which coincides with the time when construction noise is allowed.

I support the idea of backyard agriculture, but there needs to be some limits. I’ve never been awakened by the sound of growing vegetables.
