This morning, I woke up craving a piece of toast with blackberry jam.

However, upon investigating the pantry, I found that we were flat out of bread. So, it was obvious: I would have to make some. I’d never made bread before, and had hardly any idea how to start. But I had a feeling a good deal of flour would be involved, so I ground some up and put it in a bowl…

An uncertain amount of time later, the kitchen filled with the heavenly aromas of fresh bread. I broke open a still-steaming loaf… but couldn’t bring myself to harden a slice of its moist, fluffy goodness in the toaster.

That’s when The Duck came in. She raised an eyebrow* cynically when I told her that I’d made bread and was rather upset that I couldn’t make it into toast. After trying (and savoring) a bite, she grinned** and said, "my dear! The sign of a good loaf is one too good to be toasted–all bakers live by that rule!"

*ducks don’t really have eyebrows, technically speaking, but you get the point.
**another thing ducks can’t exactly do.

  1. Look in the outskirts, Roswell and Marietta and such, and look for farm supply stores.
