Compost in 14 -21 days & How to make a Tumbler Bin Composter

This video shows how to make an inexpensive compost tumbler bin for under .00. I also give tips and briefly explain how to make compost in 14-21 days. This is the first of several videos I’ll be uploading of my organic garden, from composting, to germinating the seeds I sell, to maintaining my organic garden and until the harvest day. Everything starts with Compost making. Hey, I am not a pro, nor intent to teach others what they already know. I am just showing the way I garden in this beautiful Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico. Anyone can compost at home. Taking in consideration some viewers still have “dial up” internet connections, I tried to keep my video to under 4 minutes. If the pictures are running too fast for you, please feel free to click “pause” so you can read at your pace. If your don’t like the background music, please turn off the sound in your computer. In my next video, I will explain when to use dry and raw manure, and other ways to compost. With everything said, I truly hope this video motivates you to start composting at home. Hey, I used to trash 4 garbage bags weekly…now only one. Composting not only saves me several $ $ in water and fertilizers, but I am also contributing to fight our terrible Global Warming. Wouldn’t you do the same? Learn more composting: www.huertocaseroorganico.com All my videos are or will be written in English and Spanish. Enjoy!

  4. Great video and music. We compost but didn’t know about urine adding nitrogen. I’m going to my compost bin now after writing this and add some nitrogen. Thanks!

  7. Great vid Bongosmania! The 2 week time frame is something I wonder about though.

@ pretjim2011 it sounds like you have been watching me in my garage! LOL
I watched a few vids and stole some ideas then added some of my own. The bottom of the black compost barrel sits about 30 inches off the ground. The axle through the middle is mounted on bearings. 2, 2″ pipes bolted to the sides of the barrel agitate the compost when turning the barrel.

If you wish PM me and I’ll pass on what I did.

  8. I used to own a commercially made one of these, about the size of a 200 litre drum. It was incredibly efficient. Beautiful compost in 2 weeks. A handle turned it round and there was room underneath to put a wheelbarrow so that it could be emptied easily. Sadly, the manufacturer is no longer in existence.

  9. “Emissions made from compost are bad as well.” PLEASE! Do show us how YOUR compost pile does therefore do the same.
We await your wisdom with baited breath . . .

  10. Apart from the lawnmower gas, how is he using gasoline? The blue plastic is being RECYCLED for another use without adding to its carbon footprint. You are so full of your self-importance, yet you contribute nothing to this planet.
    You should be recycled ASAP.

  14. GOOD CHOICE ON THE MOWER (HUSQVARNA) WITH DRIVE.
FEW PEOPLE REALLY BREAK DOWN “THINGS” TO BE COMPOSTED.
EITHER DON’T KNOW OR DON’T NEED TO.
IN ANY CASE, THE SMALL YOU BREAK IT DOWN IT “””REALLY SPEEDS””” UP THE PROCESS.
LIKE ICE ON A HOT ROAD 10 LB. BLOCK VS 10 LBS OF SHAVED ICE.
I PESONALLY WOULD ADD SOME PREVIOUS COMPOST THE LIVE MICROORGANISMS ARE LIVE AND READY TO GO FOR A BETTER COMPOST AND BREAK DOWN.
    I REALLY ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO.
IGNORE THE “” BURROS REBUZNANDO”” THEY ARE JUST BURROS.

  16. except the barrel was already made, and the gasses from the compost are the very same that are created on the forest floor every single day. Where else do you suppose we get metal? You act as though composting causes greenhouse gasses, yet you mention your own compost pile? That is odd…

  17. Thanks for the awesome video. I had one question, do I need the bungs (stoppers for the holes) to keep the compost in, or will it be ok if those bungs are missing?

  18. Neat! Except you’re using gasoline and polluting our world. Emissions made from compost are bad as well. The plastic barrel has its own carbon footprint and the metal had to be mined, the ore raped from our earth.

On second thought, think I’ll do it the old fashioned way and just rotate my large compost pile.

  22. Loved the video, I would never have worked out to use a lawnmower to break up compost.
I have a broken garden shredder but that’ll get fixed after I have finished everything else, I’m not holding breath.
This method will do nicely in the meantime.
    thank you.

  23. the most efficient way of being self reliant is inevitably green, whether you believe in global warming or not.
The best set ups I have ever witnessed utilised a philosophy called permaculture, if you are serious about self reliance that’s where it is at.

  24. I’d say using human urine is only okay for you plants if it isnt very concentrated. Tip:If your urine is yellow its too concentrated and also mean you need to be drinking more water. Urine is supposed to be clear like water.

  25. Great video and loved the music. The global warming thing is crap though. Still the video was great and the idea is great too. Interesting angle on the urine. I had never thought about that. A professional athlete could grow strawberries the size of watermelons with all the steriods in their pee. :>)
