Urban Farming: Hydroponics in the City
Keeping agriculture sustainable increasingly means keeping it local. Besides the environmental benefit of reducing reliance on fossil-fuel guzzling transportation, eating local food is a more seasonal and often healthier experience. With concern about food security growing, it might turn out to be safer, too. The folks in charge of the Science Barge, a new urban farming experiment in New York, are bringing local food production closer than ever. In this video Vanessa Rae learns about the floating greenhouse facility, which is designed as a demonstration of how urban space, especially rooftop space in big cities like New York, can be used to efficiently produce food. Self-powered by solar panels, wind turbines, and a biodiesel generator, the Science Barge uses state of the art computer technology and an agricultural technique called hydroponics to grow fruits and veggies using much less water and space than field farming. Watch out, city slickers. Farm country is coming to your neighborhood.

Mansanto has demonstrated that they are willing to crush the little guy with brute force (lawyers, etc), that the courts will not protect the small if the large pay better, and that havoc is coming. Protect yourself through education and preparation.

@mdlittle5466 No, no, I am not letting that ‘derail my desire’ at all, but I know it does others and that is why it upsets me. There are other organizations and ‘movements’ too that are doing great stuff like the urban farming movement both here and overseas. I am optimistic and as a science major and someone that volunteers for many conservation and humanitarian organizations I am trying to be part of the solution. No I am confident that things are and only will continue to get better.

@dragonamt Don’t allow the thoughts of a few derrail your desire to see a better future…regardless of Peter Joseph’s opinions regarding particular issues – the fact remains that honesty between the current existing government and it’s constituents have been consistantly violated. I concur that when such sensationalism is disregarded and the RBE appended, the TZM can still prove to be a viable communication and education platform regarding thusly.

@mdlittle5466 Yeah, I’m pretty pissed with TZM though, not only has PJ continued to focus on irrelevant conspiracy theories, TZM broke up with TVP. I like what people are focusing on in TZM but as long as PJ, who still pretty much runs it, keeps promoting 9/11 crap, he will continue marring the credibility of a RBE. Still, if you ignore the other vids about 9/11 and just stick to the addendum video your at least on the right track.

That’s a big if, and very unrealistic. Sadly, there’s no technology to remove the profit motive. Are you aware how quickly fish populations are declining? It’s not the bears demanding more fish! Are you aware of the Texas sized islands of plastic in the Pacific and Atlantic? Feeding the world isn’t the only issue. Sure we CAN feed everyone, then they’ll just breed more and it’s back to square one.

Instead of ranting how bout stating some facts.
You are rite that the Earth AS IT IS cannot support the population however with technology like this it CAN. if every city would create a hydroponics farm it would feed everyone. Even in places where you couldn’t normally grow food you can with this technology. there is no reason why people should go hungry with a little brains and elbow grease the world could be fed.
