@tjberger09 I would try 1/4 of a cup (or a little less) for 3 gallons…..but this mix will not burn your plants if you use too much. Try experimenting with a couple of pots using different amounts and check the results you get!
i went to the local ag store today and bought everything except the greensand which i forgot about. on the lime all they had was “hydrated lime” will this work, as well? roughly 1/2 cup of fertilizer per 3gal of finished potting mix? Thanks.
@sal39759 3.5 to 4.0?!?! WOW! The black clay here is in the 7.5 to 8.5 range! Thanks for the info! I’ll use it as side dressing this next year and I’ll till some more in at the end of the year. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

@bjusticeforever I add it to my potting mix but you can also incorporate it into your row……using about a quart per 100 foot of row (if can also be used as a side dressing). If you have a high ph soil, I would reduce the lime and add sulfur to the mix. Here, my ph is around 3.5 – 4.0 and need the lime.
Do you simply add a handful per tomato plant or broadcast it and till it in? I’ve been making compost for the past few months and really don’t have enough to feed all of my plants for next spring. I’m definitely interested in trying this recipe of yours. The only issue I have is the lime: we have pretty alkaline soil here and I’ve been adding sulfur to get the pH down. Should I add a bit of sulfur to get help keep my pH down? Would it hurt the fertilizer mix? Thanks.

@20chemist that conversion is way above my pay grade!! You would have to submit the mix to the same lab for analysis and then they could give you the proper application rate. Sorry, Greg
Thanks!! I received my soil test back and they recommended 20-25 lbs of 12-12-12. How can I get that ratio from these fertilizers if I go buy at the co-op?

U need to do a little research…..using brain matter as a feed additive is what caused it. Since only one case of mad cow disease has been found in the US (which the cow was imported from Canada), I don’t think we have too much to worry about. You must have gotten your info from Oprah!
I got all the materials from my local farmer’s co-op. They carried everything onhand. Any farm and garden supply should carry them or can order it for you.
Good video. Like that it sped up during the tedious mixing, but wish I knew what you said during that time! Another good one for the beginner.

I use Mega Green or Multi-Bloom liquid concentrate. It’s a catfish protein based foliar fertilizer. I grow organically and it’s approved by OMRI for organic production. That is the only fertilizer I used last year with great results. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask……..Greg

I would go with 50 – 75 pounds to start…..you really don’t have to worry about too much…..it is slow release and won’t burn the plants.
