The soil is full of glass and trash, though much less so now that we’ve sifted out so much of it. This summer it’s looking quite rich and clean and earthy. The mulch is warm and dark, seeds pushing up new shoots. After a good rain it’s so dark and lush, the ground could be in a forest somewhere, far removed from Brooklyn and its humans.

Question by Jen G: What to mix with garden soil for container garden?
I bought a bag of Miracle Grow Organic Garden Soil and after I opened it, I realized it wasn’t for containers. I’ve already read a ton of posts that you need to mix something with it or else the soil will compact and hold too much water. What I’m wondering is, what do I mix and how much? I’ve read everything from saw dust to peat moss so what would work best for vegetables? And what ratio do I add it to the garden soil? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. i think it would just be easier to buy potting soil 4- 10 bucks your going to have to buy the peat moss and other mix things anyway. besides i thought it was the other way around. i think if you don’t use potting soil your going to have to water the plants way more b/c regular soil don’t hold moisture well in containers and soil gets all hard

  2. I’m growing potted plants and didn’t mix anything in particular in with the soil. What I did do was try to fertilize with natural stuff. I used coffee grinds for nitrogen, just a little milk in a gallon of water for calcium and a banana peel “tea” for phosphate. It’s kept the garden healthy so far.
