Question by fletcher: Sustainable agriculture NGOs in developing countries?
I’m looking for any NGOs that are involved in sustainable agricultural development within developing countries. I study ecology and I’m very interested in what people are doing to promote more self-sustaining agricultural communities around the world.
Thanks!

  1. First you should check out the website of IFOAM, the International Federation for Organic Agriculture Movements. http://www.ifoam.org/ The organic farming organisations around the world are involved in many excellent ‘agro-ecological’ projects to improve agriculture in developing countries (improve environmental effects and yield production, without relying on agrochemicals).

Another organisation is the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). This has an “Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn (ASB) Programme” (ASB programme) that aims to reconcile agricultural production and development with mitigation of the adverse environmental effects of deforestation. One of the things it is studying is agro-forestry. This is a type of agro-ecological approach that involves the integrated production of perennial crops (trees or bushes) with annual crops, providing a sustainable production system of food and other products from the land. Research sites are located in humid tropical forest margins in Cameroon, Brazil, Peru, Indonesia and Thailand.
