Question by timeout: Is it true that oak leaves are toxic to goats?
I am looking to raise a few dairy goats, and heard that oak leaves are toxic, and may kill them. Since my property has oak trees I want to find out for sure.

I have never heard that, but I have heard that dead leaves from wild cherry trees can kill cattle or horses?

Quercus velutina (black oak) can be toxic to goats. So first, identify the species of oak which is growing on your property. Go buy an identification book or ask someone who is very familiar in tree identification. If you determine that there is black oak on your property, then hire a forest consultant to come in and help you with your problem so that you can raise goats on your property.

Our goats eat the live oak leaves like candy..Doesnt hurt them…I think goats seem to instinctivly know what is toxic and what is not…I wouldnt worry about it.
