Question by Mohammed: Is Dynohub a good generator for windmill?
Hello
I am building a windmill.
Is Dynohub a good generator for windmill?
Can it produce 12 volts or more (18,24) at low rpm.
Or a treadmill motor is better?
Please help me.

  1. The voltage depends on the speed of rotation of the shaft coming from the windmil and being connected to either kind of generator. Presumably the Dynohub generator will definately produce something, because it is intended to work over a wide range of rotational speeds, but it may not be the most ideal at the specific speed you are expecting. Gearing to obtain the optimal speed range will help here.

    The treadmill motor is able to work at variable speeds too, but unlike the Dynohub it may not be able to be used effectively as a generator at all. So to be sure of getting some output from your windmill, start off with the Dynohub.

  2. Since the dynohub was designed for a 26″ bicycle wheel, it’s rotational speed is actually much higher than you would think. Because a 26″ wheel has a circumference of around 80 inches and the shaft of the generator is only about one inch in circumference, so for every revolution of the bike wheel you get about 80 revs of the generator.

    Not only that, but the dynohub “big” generator is only rated at 3 watts. So unless you intend on only running a few LED’s this generator won’t do much for you. You would be much better off using (for cheapness sake) a automotive alternator with a pulley to gear it up. You can use your storage battery for excitation of the field winding and get an easy 45 amps at 12V ( 540 watts) or a 70 amp for close to a 1000 watts. The alternators are cheap, durable and turn at fairly low rpm’s

    Google “making homemade windmills with alternators” and there should be instructions on doing it and picking the right rotor size and number of blades etc.
