Question by kiwi_dustin: I wish to capture a hive I found, to raise honey. How is this done safely?
I live in Oklahoma, where the honey bees supposedly died off a few years ago due to some illness. They are re-appearing, gradually. My daddy used to raise honeybees, and it’s been said that I’m a “bee charmer” as is my eldest sister. I would love to grab the colony of small honey bees I found yesterday, and place them in a hive, then try to help them divide into other hives, to repopulate the speceies around here. I also like fresh honey!! Can someone help me to learn how this is safely done?
I’m aware that bees can be dangerous. I know that I’m not allergic, or I’d not even think about attempting this. As I said earlier, my father raised bees, he had 5 bee hives on our farm, but would never let me go out to watch what he did with them. He never captured bees in any case, he bought pre-organized hives from other individuals.

I’ve already determined these are European Honeybees, not African. They are quite docile. I’m also aware of the equipment involved. So, to be more explicit in my question, would it be better to remove the entire hive, and place it in a receptacle, or open the hive, hunt for the queen, and remove her.

Further, I’ve HEARD that use of tobacco smoke will sedate bees without any serious or long lasting harm. Is this true?

I was, indeed thinking of going in at night, with smoke, and a bee suit, and a pre-arranged hive ready to place the queen inside. Where, however, would the queen be located, and how do I get her out unobtrusively?
Thanx

  1. If you get the queen, the rest will follow. you need a bee suit, and a place to put them- get your new box ready, and preferably at night, move the queen, The rest will find her.

  2. Be warned: bees are more dangerous than people realise.

  3. I think you should keep the whole hive, but damage it before placing it in the intended receptacle, that way the bees will expand the hive in the container when they make repairs, that way you won’t have to worry about finding the queen bee.
