  1. if its the self exciting coil version (only two wires) then yes.. my apprentice master has one in his back garden to charge up his batteries (hes a radio ham… not a robot!)

his mill has a 4foot rotor span, and pumps the juice out on a windy day… he might be 74, but hes got email and if your interested in his design ill pass your addy along and you can have a look at his plans…

oh, i know its an arcane statement, but i was his apprentice… and even thought im now 51, he’s still the master (and he looks like Yoda)
im a structural fabricator… and john was my teacher…

  2. An alternator is designed to be spun at high rpm, so you will need to gear or belt from a large drive on the rotor to a small drive on the alternator and maybe do it in a couple of steps. You will have to design the blades to turn as fast as possible while producing enough force to turn the alternator. The huge bladed fans turn rather slowly with lots of torque and drive a complicated gear train to provide a high speed drive to make the generator as efficient as possible.

  3. Don’t be put off by the idea that the generator is designed to operate at high speed. In fact the automobile alternator is designed to operate at variable speeds and with proper excitation (even self excitation) will be useful at modest rpm. My generator had its armature magnetized by allowing it to produce 50 volts.for a short period of time which made it self exciting.
