Bee’s Diner is a project to raise money for girls’ scholarships in
Sarasota County for college. Here we have fresh-made potato chips on
the left, a cheeseburger with fixin’s, fries, and a chili dog.
Question by bg: why is my cat so afraid of visitors to our home?
Our 4 year old female indoor cat is very affectionate with my husband and myself, but when we have visitors, including our adult children, she hides, or runs from them and even hisses at them. she has bee raised totally indoors since she was a kitten. Oddly, she likes workmen who come to our house to fix things and even rubs on their legs and lies on top of their tools.
Can you help? Leave your own answer in the comments!
have you had her since birth or since she was a kitten? her previous owner was probably a carpenter, electriction, etc! she probably grew up her first few weeks/months to certain noises/sounds that sound familiar to her when these people show up! alot of cats are nervous around people that they aren’t used to! do your adult children come over often? often enough for her to get used to them? maybe if it isn’t enough then when they do come over you could give them a treat or her favorite toy to give to her. they shouldnt approach her right away just have them do this the next few times they come over and then whe they do then she will probably expect something from them when they vist and come over to them instead of her hissing or running off! you could probably have a treat bag or drower near the front door and give treats to anyone that comes in that wants to interact with her! this way she will eventually realise that when people come over she will probably get a treat from it! i know she is already 4 but it might still work after some time then she might be out with everyone when visiting!

My cat is like this as well. She is 4 years old, like yours too. I think every cat has a different personality. It takes time for some cats to warm up to people, get to know their scent, and know who they are. Though with the repairmen, etc..I think the cats don’t run from them because most of them have a friendly “vibe”.

The workmen do not offer a threat like your other company. They are focused on their work, and the cat knows this. The other people who visit may pay more attention to her than she wants. Also some cats are jealous of the company. We have cats that do the same thing U R describing. Make sure that company understands not to get in her face. Have then get down on the floor and offer to play but not be overly aggressive. Or just make sure she has her privacy. Cats like their regular families but not rough strangers, or people who smell different. Good luck.

LoL! My cat who is 7 years old who is huge(but not that huge) is also scared of people coming into the house, He hisses, and even attacks them if being touched or picked up. It is probably because your cat thinks that they might hurt him.

Both of my cats disappear when company arrives. Only one will eventually venture out to check them out. The other one doesn’t come out until they’re gone.
