I dug down into the soil beside the pen wall to the level of the bottom of the lowest breeze block. I can now get in to remove the wall without worrying about the weight of the soil.

Question by tagsbear: Should I remove the gravel from my garden soil?
I am a beggining gardener. I am making a garden, next to a driveway that was gravel. I turned over the dirt and there is ALOT of gravel in the soil. Should I try and remove it? I want to plant perennials and annuals.

  1. I would be best if you do. You need to screen the soil – pass it through a mesh large enough to let the soil through, but to stop the gravel. You can buy or make these, but I saw in a gardening magazine once that you can use an ironing board as well – as long as the top of the ironing board is mesh, and you take the cover off! If your ironing board won’t work, you can get mesh as your local home improvement store, and make a frame out of 2x4s. Make it a size that you can comfortably handle. Then place the screen on top of a wheel barrow, shovel in some dirt, shake the screen, and there you have screened soil!

  2. Yes, it will help. Then get some plastic edging and put it between the gravel and the dirt.
