Question by Mr. Bradshaw: Have you ever had goat’s milk, cheese, or any other dairy product derived from goats?
How do dairy products derived from goats taste when compared to cow’s milk? I don’t think I’ve ever had goat milk or cheese.
Come to think of it, I HAVE eaten feta cheese. Pretty good stuff, didn’t realize it came from goats.

  10. I’ve had feta cheese, which is made from goat’s milk.

Feta is a particularly aromatic, sharp variety of cheese — it’s excellent sprinkled on salads or as part of a cheese mixture on pizza.

  17. Having been in the fine dining business for years I have been exposed to many different cheeses. Some goat cheese may be a little gamey, but I love it. Try some Chevre from the cheese section. The best goat cheese i ever had came from a friends goats that roamed his property pretty freely. He drank a quart of goat milk every day.

  19. Yes you can go to the cheese counter if you have a big chain store in your area and then you can ask for a sample. That way you’ll know how you feel about it.

  21. Ummmmm. I have never drank straight goats milk but I have eaten a ton of goat milk cheese. You can buy it in the dairy section of grocery stores in my area. It is very good, but nothing like the authentic stuff from Mexico. They melt it and serve it with chorizo and corn tortillas as an appetizer. It is soooo good. I buy it and use it in lots of recipies at home. The goats milk itself I dont think would be all that good. It is nothing like cows milk and is very strong, smelling and tasting. I dont know if you have ever been around goats but they smell, and if you have ever had to milk one then you probably would never want to drink the milk. That was my experience anyway.

  22. I’ve had Mont Rachet goat cheese and it’s excellent. It’s a little like bleu cheese.

Goat milk is supposed to be exactly like cow’s milk, only whiter, but I really noticed it tasted completely different. Then again, I’m from Wisconsin, and when I moved to Indiana I thought the milk down here was nasty. It took a LONG time to adjust, especially since milk is just about all I drink. Maybe I’m just biased, but Wisconsin has the best milk in the world!

  23. Sorry, no, I have not drunk goats’ milk or eaten goat cheese, though I have used soaps made from goats’ milk. But you have really piqued my interest on the subject!

According to Wikipedia, “Goats’ milk is more easily digested than cows’ milk and is recommended for infants and people who have difficulty with cows’ milk. The curd is much smaller and more digestable. Moreover it is naturally homogenized since it lacks the protein agglutinin.”

    Here’s another weird factoid:
“Whale’s milk, not generally used for human consumption, is one of the highest-fat milks. It contains, on average, 10.9% protein, 42.3% fat, and 2.0% lactose, and supplies 443 kcal of energy per 100 grams.”

Mmm… Gonna go get a big glass of whale milk.

  24. Not sure — isn’t Feta cheese made from goat’s milk? If so, I’ve had goat cheese. Kind of salty, but other than that I really like it, especially in Greek salad.

  29. My brother and I used to have goats milk on our cereal. Mom had her own goats and milked them herself. After awhile, we didn’t even notice. It was just milk. Haven’t had any in years.

  30. It’s like the difference between lemonade and orangeade. They are similar, but not quite the same. At one time I was put on goat milk (and goat cheese) because i was lactose intolerant. Sounds goofy, because you would think goat milk and cow milk would have the same reaction, but they didn’t. I could tolerate goat milk, but not cow milk. The goat milk also has smaller fat particles, so they digest more easily.

  31. I like goat cheese quite a bit. It is a not at all strong like feta cheese. I cooked it with chicken rolled over it with a marinara sauce and it turned out rather well. If you want to try it go to Wal-Mart and they sell it in a small package that way if you don’t like it you did not have to buy a expensive large package. If you do like it at least you know where you can get it for next time. Get a nice bottle of wine and some crackers and impress a lady sometime!

  32. Yes, I have had goat’s milk. It is a healthy alternative to cow’s milk and much more nutritious than soymilk. Try it – it’s sweet er than cow’s milk also.

  33. Goat’s milk products are an acquired taste. Like anything, there are people who love it, and those who hate it. Sample a bit and find out for yourself if its something you like. I will say that there is a taste difference between brands, so try a couple of different brands of the same thing. Lastly, if you find you don’t care for straight goat cheese… try a couple of the ones with herbs and spices mixed in… I have friends who don’t care for goat cheese plain, but love the herbed varieties.
