Question by RunnerMaddy: Anyone planted watermelon in square foot garden?
I bought a little cup of watermelon seeds, it came with a jiffy paper cup. Now three seeds are growing in that little cup. My parnets said that I can only plant them in a square foot garden. Am I in for more then I bargained for?

Thanks!

  1. I don’t understand why your parents would insist that watermelons will only grow in square foot gardens! They’ll grow anywhere they have sun, warmth, good dirt and a continuous supply of water (keep the soil moist, not soaking wet all the time). They will vine, so make sure they have room to ramble. Ours had vines about 4 feet long, maybe 5 feet. We grew ours in the planting strip along our driveway.

Make sure your growing season is long enough for watermelons, though! There’s nothing more disappointing than discovering your beautiful watermelons are still too young to be tasty but the season has turned and it’s too cold for them to ripen. Harvest when the leaf and curly bit closes to the fruit turn brown.

Homegrown watermelon are sooooo good! I hope it works out for you!

  2. Hmmmm… a square foot is not a lot to work with. If no more room is available, I would suggest building a trellis from twigs.

Create a tripod structure, then add cross sections between the tripod legs in a ladder-like fashion. Train the vine up on the trellis. You will need to support the fruit as the melons begin to get large. Support with mesh or old stockings tied to the trellis.

    Good luck!
