This Thursday, (July 18th, 2013), I’ll be hosting the Homestead Honey Hour and will be talking about adding home dairying to your homesteading / prepper repe…

I have recently bought a new milking goat and plan on taking her to my
county fair and wondered if you had any tips on retraining her, she is very
stubborn and wont listen because she is always distracted by my other fair
projects. Do you have any advice?
Looking forward to the show. It was back in ’85 we got into goats when
Grant Colfax was heading off to Harvard and had been homeschooled
(Homeschooling For Exellence is the book) and known as the goat boy here in
CA. He got us into goats (Nubian) and two goats grew to dozens. Google and
other high tech companies rent them for keeping the grass down. Neighbor
has 100_ goats. Another has Boer for meat. Big goat area here in the
Sierras.
I’m afraid I’m very tech Gadget stupid. No smart phone, no texting, no
ipod, no ipad (although my husband is addicted to his), no “apps”, etc.
However, I am betting that information is on the Prepper Broadcasting
Network site. I DO seem ot remember that it says somewhere on the site that
you CAN download the programs so that sounds like it’s possible to me.
I have had the experience of raw milk lasting longer than pasteurized.
Before we had milk goats, we traveled cross state lines to get raw
milk…shhh….so my experience is yes! π
I hope to be there Renee, this is our goal and we are trying to gather as
much info and insight from others before buying a goat.

Goats are the topic of this week’s Homestead Honey Hour, markin’ my
calendar and hopin’ no last moment inconvenience pops up,….thumbs up
beautiful!! =)
No problem on the pm “thing”. (Incidently, I have a video up that explains
where to find the button and how to do that if you’re using a computer). As
for raw milk: I home pasteurize all milk for human consumption, so no
experience with how long raw milk keeps for. My pasteurized milk will last
for 10 – 14 days, depending on how many time the kids forget to put the jar
back in the fridge. . . ; )
Also, since switching to Purina goat chow, both my does’ milk seems to be
“richer” — that is, have more cream in it which readily separates out.
That suggests to me that nutritional plays a big role in cream production
as well. Have you considered a tabletop cream separater? I am just
pondering if maybe you’re not seeing much cream because it’s just not there
for some reason??
Hi, sorry I just could not get the whole PM thing to work for me. I was
wondering if you would know how long I can keep raw goats milk in the
fridge up to, as I have some in there now for over 2 weeks. Any suggestions
would be great. You can email me at. jessicacarey5@live.com thanks so much.

Hi Vention, I can’t imagine ANY milk staying fresher without refridgeration
versus with. Milk curdles at room temperature relatively quickly. I’ve not
heard of the non-refridgerated “thing”. In my own experience, my home
pasteurized milk tastes and keeps MUCH longer than any raw I’ve tried to
keep, no matter what I do or how meticulous I try to be in handling it.
(And I have yet to try anyone else’s raw goat’s milk past 48 hours old that
doesn’t taste “goaty” — at least to me.)
Just got our first piglet today and I’m just a stressed out and nervous as
a new mommy. I have so many questions. The farm we got her from is fairly
new to breeding and did a good job of trying to answer my questions. I hope
I dont drive you and Bev insane LOL
We LOVE our goats and their milk and we love you so we will definitely be
listening. Our big mystery is, we have a heck of a time getting cream from
our Nubian milk since it is so naturally homogenized. Would Calcium
Chloride help separate the cream since that is whats used in store bought
milk to do that? Have you ran into this problem?
Paul Wheaton spoke about his brothers’ allergies going away a few months
after his dairy goats started producing. Supposedly something is in raw
goats milk that took care of his problem. Is it true that non pasturized
milk stays fresh longer when they’re not refrigerated? I hope to hear your
thoughts on this on Thursday. I’m setting my phone to beep at me when the
show is about to start. I do love my technology.
I’m planning to get a couple of milking goatsο»Ώ
